Loré Lixenberg Residency: Berberiana! A celebration of Cathy at 100
Cafè Oto, E8 3DL , [Venue Details]Rarely is the potential of the human voice harnessed in ways more perception-altering than the performances of Loré Lixenberg, a British mezzo-soprano who honed her vocal craft in relatively conventional channels but elected to use it in the realms of the bold avant-garde.
Cathy Berberian's revolutionary "New Vocality" went far beyond extended vocal techniques—she fundamentally reimagined the voice as a compositional force, dramatically extending both vocal techniques and the dramatic potential of singing whilst challenging traditional ideas about who gets to author a musical performance.
Her pioneering work laid crucial groundwork for understanding voice not simply as an instrument, but as a political and social agent capable of reshaping our sonic landscape based on her belief that "the singer should become the composer of the live performance”.
